KABUL (Pajhwok): A child has been killed and another injured after an unexploded mortar shell detonated in eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the governor’s office said the incident occurred on Monday in the Sorkh Diwal area of the 9th police district of Jalalabad, the provincial capital.
It said a 10-year-old boy, identified as Bakhtiar, found an old mortar shell while grazing livestock in the area. The ordnance exploded while he was playing with it, killing him.
The statement added another nine-year-old boy was also injured in the explosion and taken to the regional hospital for treatment.
