The Iranian Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea.

Details : According to the Iranian ministry, the attack took place on Saturday morning, causing an explosion on board the vessel, killing one sailor and wounding another.

The ministry said the attack allegedly reflects Kyiv's ongoing "irrational and hostile approach" towards Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry also stated that the country will defend its interests and national security in accordance with the principle of self-defense under international law.

Tehran called the attack on its ship an act of aggression and accused Kyiv of trying to expand the war in Ukraine.

What preceded it : Earlier on Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced "very good results of long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea ."

"In particular, these are vessels that were involved in the transportation of military cargo with Iran, and a warship," the president noted.
