A 36-year-old man has been arrested over the suspicious death of his father, police sources have told the ABC.

The victim was found with significant burns after allegedly being set on fire outside his home in Western Sydney.

The son has been arrested by officers and was in hospital under police guard.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly setting fire to his father and leaving him dead outside a Western Sydney home, police sources have told the ABC.

The man in his 60s was found dead with significant burns in front of a property at Glenmore Park.

Emergency services were called by neighbours to the home on Wargon Crescent about 12:50am on Thursday following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze and a crime scene was established.

Forensic examination of the deceased would be undertaken to determine the exact cause of death, Nepean Police Area Commander Superintendent Trent King said.

The son was not living at the Glenmore Park home with his father at the time of the incident.

"There is no history of domestic violence between the two parties," Superintendent King said.

The older man had multiple injuries across his body, including significant burns, police said.

"There appears to have been an altercation between the two parties there, following a break and enter into the premises — the front door was forced," Superintendent King said.

"An accelerant appears to have been used ... however there's no further information at this stage around what actually occurred within the premises."

The 36-year-old son was arrested by police about 6:45am at Parkes Avenue, Werrington.

He was taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard to have minor injuries to his hands and feet treated.

The man's car and the scene around the man's car in Werrington was being examined by police.

Superintendent King said the man arrested was "well known" to police.

"It was a really distressing scene for our first responders, and not a normal scene for anybody to be confronted with; particularly the extent of the injuries to our victim," Superintendent King said.

"We have a significant amount of resources in the field, canvassing of the area to try and understand further information."

Detectives appealed for anyone with information or CCTV or dash cam footage related to the incident to contact police.
