Military sources and locals say that tensions are high as the military junta forces fired heavy weapons from Sittwe Township in Rakhine State into the border with Ponnagyun Township.

After a ceasefire between the military and the Arakan Army (AA) in Sittwe Township since late June, heavy weapons fire has resumed since July 13.

A local man said, “After days of calm in Sittwe, there was renewed heavy weapon fire yesterday. The 12th Police Battalion in Sittwe is carrying out attacks and attacks.”

The two sides have been engaged in a military standoff in Ponnagyun Township for a year and a half, and they are fighting using heavy weapons, small arms, and drones.

The Arakan Army mainly controls Ponnagyun Township and Wabo Island in Sittwe Township, while the military junta is conducting military operations based in villages on the southern side of Shwe Mingan Stream in Sittwe Township.

A man from Ponnagyun, a village on the Sittwe border, said, “We started hearing heavy artillery fire on July 13. I don’t know exactly where it was fired from. The fighting had been quiet for about half a month, and now we’re hearing it again.”

Fighting has been ongoing in Sittwe Township since early 2025, and the fighting has spread to within 4 miles of the regional headquarters in Sittwe.

Currently, fighting is taking place in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu townships, which are controlled by the military junta in Rakhine State.

The Arakan Army is fighting the military dictatorship on the remaining fronts in Rakhine, as well as on the fronts in Ayeyarwady, Bago, Magway, and Chin States.
