A day at the beach was interrupted by the discovery of an unidentified explosive ordnance (UXO) in the waters of Kalamalka Lake.

Officers from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP were advised Tuesday, July 14, of a suspicious device found at Pumphouse Beach shortly after 4:30 p.m.

“A swimmer found the device in the water and brought it to shore,” said Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media liaison officer Cpl. Tania Finn. “Police confirmed it was an unexploded ordnance that appeared to be a severely corroded artillery round.”

RCMP wish to remind the public that it is never advisable to handle any potentially explosive device.

The area has been cordoned off awaiting the arrival of the Canadian Forces Explosive Disposal Unit in order to safely remove the device.

UXOs have been found multiple times before in Kal Lake.

Mortars were fired into the lake from the Commonage Road area during war training.

The beach has been used over the past year as a pilot project for a dog beach. Coldstream council voted unanimously to make a portion of the facility a permanent dog beach site starting this summer.
