Civilians killed and injured in shelling with a drone targeting the locality of Mellit, North Darfur

A human rights organization reported on Saturday that an army drone targeted civilian areas in the locality of Mellit in North Darfur state, causing panic among the civilian population.

The organization said, citing eyewitnesses, that the drone arrived around eleven in the morning Sudan time, coming from the Egyptian border through the Al-Owainat Mountains region, before carrying out strikes targeting the southern side of the city of Mellit, including the police headquarters and an area adjacent to the Mellit reservoir, in addition to a public park.

According to testimonies, the shelling took place in areas inhabited by civilians, amid fears of casualties and material losses, at a time when no official toll has been released so far.

The organization called on the Sudanese army to stop targeting civilians and civilian areas, and to abide by international humanitarian law, which criminalizes the targeting of civilian objects during armed conflicts.

North Darfur state has been witnessing an escalation in drone attacks in recent months, amid growing warnings of worsening humanitarian conditions and increased threats to civilian lives.
