At least two people are dead and multiple others are wounded after a shooting at a street festival in Toronto, police say.

In a social media post, police said they have secured the scene. However, the suspect or suspects in the shooting are not in custody.

Police said they received reports of an active shooter near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue at 8:12 p.m.

Authorities said a "large police presence remains in the area as officers continue their investigation" and asked people to avoid the area.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a statement on social media.

"I am devastated by the senseless violence at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival that has claimed two lives and injured others," he said in the post.

"The person responsible must be caught, brought to justice and spend the rest of their life behind bars," he added.
