On June 26, a journalist identified as Atikuzzaman Rimu, who is General Secretary of Sharsha Upazila (Sub-District) Press Club and Sharsha correspondent for daily Jashore Barta, was attacked by a man identified as Arikul Islam, accused in several criminal cases, including drug trafficking, while collecting news in Sharsha Upazila (Sub-District) of Jashore District, reports The Daily Star. As Rimu reached in front of the Sharsha sub-registrar's office after completing his reporting work, Arikul and several of his associates, who had been lying in wait, attacked him. Several local newspapers had previously published reports on Arikul’s activities which made him hostile toward local journalists, added Rimu.
