A gangster, identified as Sham Das, who was in police custody, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during an encounter with the Jalandhar City Police near Nakhan Wala Bagh in Jalandhar District on July 7, reports The Tribune. A native of Bihar, he had been arrested on July 4 for allegedly possessing one kilogram of ganja. Police had taken him to recover the weapon used in the offence when, during the recovery proceedings, he allegedly opened fire on the police party with the recovered weapon in an attempt to escape. The police retaliated in self-defense, injuring the accused.
