On July 6, two personnels of the Assam Rifles (AR) were killed in a suspected National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) attack near Nungshangkhong under Ukhrul Police Station in Ukhrul District, Manipur, The Hindu reports. The ambush targeted a patrol of the 40 AR, triggering an exchange of fire that reportedly lasted for several hours. The slain personnel were identified as Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh. Additional Security Forces (SFs) were deployed and launched search operations. While some reports attributed the attack to a purported NSCN "Eastern Flank" faction, NSCN-IM denied any involvement, stating that no such faction exists within its organisation, reaffirming its commitment to the July 1997 ceasefire agreement and the ongoing Indo-Naga peace process.
