5th July 2026
On July 5, a search operation by Security Forces (SFs) against two local Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists entered its second day in the Meemandar area of Shopian District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), reports The Hindu and Greater Kashmir. The operation, launched after the terrorists were detected through surveillance cameras on July 3, involves the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Identified as Latif and Zakir, both residents of Kulgam District, the terrorists opened fire on an approaching Army team, triggering an encounter. Army's Victor Force reinforced the operation, sealing escape routes through dense orchards, while SFs cleared four of seven villages and maintained a tight cordon. Officials stated Zakir joined LeT in 2024 and Latif in 2025. The operation is underway amid heightened security for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
