Two people have been killed and two others injured following a confrontation between police officers and residents at Sefwi Sayerano in the Western North Region.

The incident occurred when officers from the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Police Command stormed the community to arrest a suspected drug peddler.

According to some residents, the police personnel were not in uniform and so some of them attempted to resist the arrest which led to the confrontation.

“What some security persons in this area do is that they come here to take money from galamseyers and drug users who stay close to a forest reserve in the community. This time round they came to arrest one of the alleged drug peddlers and the guys around resisted,” one of the residents asserted.

He said during the confrontation, the supposed police men should have given a warning shot but they fired at the people and killed two persons who were not involved in the fracas.

The eyewitnesses told DAILY GUIDE that another person is reportedly missing, and expressed the fears that the individual may also have been shot.

“The injured victims have been taken to a health facility for treatment, while one of the bodies of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary, with the other still in the town,” he added.

8 Policemen Interdicted

Meanwhile, eight police officers with the Western North Regional Police Command who were involved in the shooting incident have been interdicted.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the Western North Regional Police Command has restored calm and has commenced investigations into the shooting incident.

A statement signed by DSP Humphrey Amoah, Staff Officer of the Command, thanked the chiefs, community leaders and all other stakeholders who worked together with the police to restore calm.

“The Western North Regional Command assures the public of a thorough investigation into the incident, and any further development will be communicated,” the statement noted.
