A Ukrainian military intelligence officer has confessed to killing a woman suspected of carrying out a bomb attack on a wealthy Ukrainian-born businessman in Monaco, Ukrainian authorities have confirmed.
Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) and Security Service (SBU) said in a joint statement on Tuesday that they had found the body of Anastasiia Berezovska, 39, with “gunshot wounds to the head”.
Berezovska was Monaco’s chief suspect for the assassination attempt carried out against businessman Vadym Yermolaiev on June 29.
Investigators said Berezovska fled the principality on foot into neighboring France before arriving in Ukraine on July 1. They also said that after returning to Ukraine, Berezovska had been in contact with her family, a former law enforcement officer, and an active HUR officer.
“Knowing that both men had repeatedly transferred money to Berezovska via cryptocurrency wallets and bank accounts, investigators examined them as possible suspects in the attempted murder in Monaco,” they said.
“The active HUR officer confessed to killing Berezovska together with another suspect. He also said that he had not informed his superiors about his contacts with Berezovska, the money transfers, or any of his other actions, and had acted on his own initiative.”
The agencies also said that “a search of the former law enforcement officer’s home also uncovered a basement that appeared to have been used as a torture chamber.
“Both suspects were detained on suspicion of committing murder as part of a group acting in concert,” they said.
Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported earlier on Tuesday that Berezovska’s body had been found near Kyiv close to 11pm local time on Monday.
Yermolaiev regains consciousness
Yermolaiev, who was initially in a coma after the bomb blast, has since regained consciousness and his condition has reportedly improved, according to French media reports.
His 13-year-old son’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
But his girlfriend Nasobina suffered severe injuries and had to have both her legs amputated. Doctors said her condition remained critical following major blood loss, with concerns she could lose some sensory functions, including sight, hearing and speech.
Yermolaiev, who received Cypriot nationality in 2019, was placed under Ukrainian sanctions in 2023. Ukrainian media reported that the sanctions were linked to alleged business activity in Russian-occupied Crimea.
