29th June 2026
On 29 June 2026, in Quito - Eugenio Espejo (Pichincha), unidentified individuals detonated an explosive device outside the offices of the Mining Regulation and Control Agency (ARCOM) on San Salvador Street and Eloy Alfaro Avenue. The perpetrators arrived in a car and left suitcases outside the building, which exploded minutes later, causing significant damage to the government offices and slightly injuring a security guard. Threatening pamphlets directed at the director of ARCOM were found at the scene, indicating the attack was intended to intimidate authorities because of enforcement actions against illegal mining. Hours later, the suspects' vehicle was found burned nearby. Police attributed the attack to the Los Lobos Box gang after the army and police arrested seven suspects on 3 July. There were no fatalities.
