Resistance forces in Magwe Region’s Myaing Township say they destroyed one of the regime’s Mi-17 utility helicopters with suicide drones on Tuesday.
The incident occurred near Twinma village 20 km south of Myaing town, where regime troops are sheltering at a base of the allied Pyu Saw Htee militia.
A resistance fighter told The Irrawaddy that the drones were launched just after the chopper had finished offloading supplies and reinforcements and was preparing for takeoff.
The Magwe People’s Defense Force (PDF) released a video showing the attack on the Russian-made helicopter with two first-person view drones.
Military defector Zin Yaw said a sergeant was killed and another seriously injured in the attack, while the chopper will need major repairs. The Magwe PDF have released no casualty report.
The regime retaliated with airstrikes near the area using Y-12 aircraft and other fighter jets, a resistance fighter said. The Harbin Y-12 is a Chinese-made transport aircraft that the regime has repurposed for bombing missions across the country due to its ability to fly at low speeds and low altitudes.
