MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WXIX) - The Butler County Bomb Squad safely recovered a cannonball found in Middletown, according to the sheriff’s office.

A homeowner got quite a surprise while digging at the base of an old oak tree Wednesday and discovered what looked like a cannonball, sheriff’s officials announced on Facebook.

The sheriff’s bomb squad was called in about 1:30 p.m.

A bomb specialist determined it was indeed a 4.75-inch round solid shot cannonball weighing nearly eight pounds.

“If you ever uncover what appears to be military ordnance or another suspicious item, do not handle it,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Leave it where it is and contact local law enforcement so it can be evaluated safely.”
