Response to a suspicious package outside the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office mid-day Tuesday immediately brought back memories of a 2013 bombing outside the facility at 815 W. 10th St.
Jackson County District Attorney Patrick Green said he immediately directed staff and other occupants of the building to evacuate when he received a report from his chief deputy DA.
Green acknowledged that the perceived threat — and that Medford police requested assistance by the Oregon State Police bomb squad — reminded him of a 2013 incident in which a homemade bomb was detonated at one window of the building.
On Tuesday, Medford police closed several blocks of West 10th Street for about three hours while waiting for the bomb squad to arrive. The suspicious package was determined to be a discarded duffle bag, and roads surrounding the DA’s office were reopened after a handful of hours.
Medford police Lt. Geoff Kirkpatrick told the Rogue Valley Times that police responded “out of an abundance of caution.”
The earlier bombing involved a known felon, Medford resident Alan Leroy McVay, who detonated a homemade bomb outside the building on Nov. 13, 2013.
