Mozambican non-governmental organisation (NGO) Plataforma Decide reported that four people were injured during Venâncio Mondlane’s arrival in the city of Nampula for the National Convention of the Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), with police firing tear gas to disperse the crowd. A video broadcast live on the Facebook page of Venâncio Mondlane, interim president of Anamola, shows at least one tear gas canister being fired by police as hundreds of supporters followed the vehicle carrying the politician through the city of Nampula. “According to witness reports, four people were injured during the reception of the president of the Anamola party today in Nampula. One was struck by a live round, allegedly fired by a police unit, while three others were injured by shrapnel from a dispersal grenade,” Plataforma Decide said in a statement published yesterday, adding that the injured were reportedly taken to Nampula Central Hospital (HCN). Contacted by Lusa, Nampula Central Hospital did not confirm the admission of any injured persons, referring any comment on the matter to Friday. Lusa also contacted the Mozambique Police (PRM) in Nampula but received no response. Mondlane, the leading figure of Mozambique’s opposition, arrived at Nampula International Airport on Thursday afternoon to take part in Anamola’s National Convention alongside around 400 party delegates. The convention begins on Saturday and is expected to elect the party’s president. Mondlane is the sole candidate. He co-founded Anamola in August 2025. Venâncio Mondlane was greeted by hundreds of Anamola members and supporters near Nampula airport’s VIP terminal, who accompanied him in a procession as he headed towards the city centre. The march was eventually impeded by police, heavily deployed at several points across the city of Nampula, particularly at the airport exit, creating moments of tension and people scattering after shots were fired to disperse the crowd. Anamola’s internal electoral process forms part of the agenda of the party’s first National Convention, which will take place from 20 to 22 June in Nampula Province. The National Convention is the party’s highest political, organisational and decision-making body, bringing together leaders, members, delegates and national and international guests to debate, define and approve the organisation’s main political, strategic and institutional directions. According to party information, the convention will include around 400 voting delegates and 50 national and international guests. The public and official opening session will be held on Saturday. On Sunday, 21 June, delegates will discuss a range of key issues relating to politics, the economy and culture in Mozambique and globally, as well as the party’s future prospects. The programme will include contributions from several national and international speakers, followed by internal elections, including the election of the party leader, the members of the National Council and the Executive Commission. Delegates will also ratify the appointments of the presidents of the national jurisdiction and oversight councils, as well as members of the ethics committee. Mozambique is expected to hold municipal elections in 2028 and general elections in 2029. Mozambique’s general elections of 9 October 2024 were marked by five months of protests and disputes over the results and electoral process, called by Venâncio Mondlane. More than 400 people were killed in clashes with police, alongside the destruction and looting of businesses and public institutions.
