CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A patient who was reportedly exposed to radiation caused a Chesterfield County emergency room to temporarily shut down Wednesday night. At about 8:22 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, crews with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS were called to Swift Creek ER — located at 14720 Hancock Village St. — regarding a possible radiation exposure. First responders learned that an unidentified person came to the emergency room because they felt ill after they may have come into contact with a radiological agent. As a precautionary measure, HAZMAT crews shut down the facility, as well as the parking lot surrounding it. The emergency room itself was also told to shelter in place while first responders performed testing. “After performing monitoring inside both the ER and the patient’s vehicle, it was determined there were no hazards and no threat to the public,” fire officials said. The patient continues to receive care at Swift Creek ER as of the time of reporting. Their exact condition, or how they may have come in contact with radiation, is not known at this time. 8News reached out to HCA Healthcare, the healthcare company associated with Swift Creek ER, for more information on this incident.
