SAA event in Oaxaca, Cieneguilla area, Mexico on Sun 14th June 2026

The Oaxaca Prosecutor's Office is investigating the murder of former mayor Carlos Orocio and his son in San Juan Quiahije; community authorities are demanding immediate justice.

The Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office (FGEO) confirmed the double homicide of former mayor Carlos Orocio and his son Celestino Orocio , which occurred on the night of Sunday, June 14, in the community of Cieneguilla, belonging to San Juan Quiahije, in the Costa region.

According to ministerial reports, the victims were inside a construction site located in the Camino a San José Ixtapan area when they were attacked with gunfire .

The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, June 14, prompting the immediate mobilization of security forces and ministerial authorities.

Following the report, a team from the State Investigation Agency (AEI) and personnel from the Institute of Forensic Services went to the site.

The Prosecutor's Office reported that ballistic evidence was secured during the investigation and packaged for analysis at forensic laboratories. Additionally, the bodies were removed for the legally required autopsies to scientifically determine the cause of death.

Carlos Orocio served as municipal president of San Juan Quiahije during the three-year period 2023–2025 , a period in which, according to community authorities, he participated in actions related to community security, care of communal lands and environmental issues .

They demand justice in the Chatina community

The Chatino Collective condemned the murder of the former mayor and his son, demanding the clarification of the case and access to justice.

They also stated that these events should not contribute to the normalization of violence in the Chatino community , and called for the protection of community authorities.

Local authorities in San Juan Quiahije also expressed condolences and highlighted the former mayor's work as a person of service to his community.
