A man opened fire in a building in Midland, Texas (USA), leaving at least one dead and 11 wounded before being killed by police, authorities said Friday.

The suspect had barricaded himself in a building south of the city, where a standoff broke out with police officers and a tactical team that responded to the gunfire, Mayor Lori Blong said during a press conference.

"The active shooter incident has been resolved and the suspect is confirmed dead," the city of Midland reported via its social media channels, adding that the scene remains active and has not yet been cleared.

Midland Police responded today, at about 8:00 a.m. local time, to a report of a shooting, according to a statement from police chief Greg Snow.

"Officers heard gunshots from a building and worked quickly to secure and evacuate the area," the statement said.

At least 11 people were injured in the shooting and have been taken to a medical center. One person died at the scene, the mayor said.

So far this year, the US has recorded 182 mass shootings - where there are four or more victims not counting the attacker - according to data from the civil organization Gun Violence Archive.
