Police arrested four persons, including an Afghan national (AN), and recovered eight sophisticated pistols and seven live cartridges while neutralising a cross-border drug and arms peddling and hawala network in Amritsar District of Punjab, reports The Tribune on June 8. Director General, Punjab Police (PP) Gaurav Yadav stated that preliminary investigations revealed the accused were in contact with a foreign-based smuggler who supplied illegal weapons through concealed drop locations. The firearms were allegedly intended for criminal elements and gangsters operating in Punjab and were distributed through a well-organised network. The operation is suspected to be linked to arms trafficking and hawala transactions, indicating the involvement of an international criminal syndicate (ICS). The police are examining financial transactions and communication records to dismantle the wider network.
