On June 6, an individual, identified as Shamsher Singh, who had been suspected of snatching a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) from a Punjab Armed Police (PAP) personnel six days earlier, was injured in an encounter with the police in Fazilka District of Punjab, reports The Tribune. The snatched weapon was also recovered from his possession. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gagan Ajit Singh said police received information about an armed person moving near the Ladhuka seepage drain area in Fazilka and suspected of planning an attack. When police reached the location, the accused allegedly opened fire. In retaliatory firing, he sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was shifted to Civil Hospital, Fazilka. Shamsher Singh is a resident of the Makhu area in Ferozepur district. Police said he, along with his associates, had earlier snatched an SLR from a PAP jawan deployed at Harike Bridge in Tarn Taran after assaulting him with sharp-edged weapons. Officials said the accused has multiple criminal cases registered against him, including under the NDPS Act and for snatching-related offences.
