An investigation is underway in Miami Gardens after officials said a would-be robber was shot in the head and died early Tuesday morning.

Few details have been released, but Miami Gardens police said the shooting took place at a home in the area of Northwest 36th Avenue and 174th Street around 1:30 a.m.

"Upon arrival, our officer located a male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head," said Diana Delgado, a spokesperson for Miami Gardens police.

According to investigators, an unidentified man was attempting to break into the home, and an altercation between him and the homeowner took place.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the subject attempted to do a robbery," Delgado continued.

The girlfriend of the homeowner then ran out to get help from a neighbor. At that point, investigators said they heard a gunshot.

The unidentified neighbor then grabbed a gun and shot the would-be robber in the head. That person was rushed to a local hospital and was pronounced dead.

"It's either two or three 'pow, pow, pow,' that's what got me up," an unidentified resident told CBS News Miami. "I look out the window and I see all the flashing lights."

Residents in the area said they never experienced something like this.

"It's very, very, very scary," the resident told CBS News Miami. "It was concerning because I'm here alone here. I haven't gone back to bed yet."

Police said that, at this point, no arrests have been made, and everyone involved has been fully cooperating.

At this point it is not known if this incident was random or if the alleged intruder knew someone at the home.
