SAA event in Oaxaca, Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz area, Mexico on Thu 11th June 2026

The mayor of Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Isidro César Figueroa Jiménez , survived an assassination attempt while overseeing excavation work on a street in this town in the Sierra Sur region of Oaxaca. A municipal worker was also injured in the attack. Both were taken to a hospital and are reported to be out of danger.

The attack occurred on Hidalgo Avenue , in the Barrio Arriba neighborhood of Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz , while the mayor was participating in work related to the excavation of a road.

According to official reports, César Figueroa received a gunshot wound to his left arm , while municipal worker Antonio Vázquez also suffered injuries from gunshot wounds.

Following the attack, both were taken to a hospital to receive specialized medical care.

The Oaxaca State Attorney General's Office reported that the injuries suffered by the mayor and the city hall worker do not put their lives at risk .

The agency indicated that various ministerial procedures are being carried out to clarify the facts, including the technical analysis of video material obtained in the area where the attack occurred.

In addition, multidisciplinary teams were deployed for the collection and processing of forensic evidence to advance the investigation.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the investigations are being carried out in coordination with corporations that are part of the state and federal security cabinet.

Authorities indicated that the work includes intelligence actions and field operations with the goal of identifying , locating, and arresting those responsible .

So far, the attackers have managed to escape and no specific line of investigation related to the attack has been publicly reported.

The attack against César Figueroa occurs in a context of violence that has affected municipal authorities in Oaxaca.

In the last two years, three sitting mayors have been assassinated. On October 15, 2024, Román Ruiz Bohórquez , mayor of Candelaria Loxicha, was murdered . Subsequently, on May 15, 2025 , Mario Hernández García , mayor of Santiago Amoltepec, was assassinated in an attack that also killed a police officer and the mayor's driver.

Likewise, on June 15, 2025 , Lilia Gemma García Soto , municipal president of San Mateo Piñas, was murdered during an armed attack registered in the town hall offices, where a municipal agent also lost his life.
