An ambush against members of the Michoacán Civil Guard left five police officers dead and another five injured in the municipality of Nahuatzen.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, June 10, mobilized both state and federal security forces and reignited concerns about the activity of criminal groups in the region.
According to initial reports, the officers were conducting patrols when they were ambushed by an armed group that opened fire on them. The attack occurred in this town in the Purépecha Plateau , located more than 100 kilometers from Morelia, Michoacán.
The Michoacán Public Security Secretariat confirmed the deaths of five officers, expressing its condolences to the families of those killed in the line of duty. It also reported that five other officers were wounded in the ambush.
Authorities reported that the injured officers were taken to various hospitals for specialized medical care. Due to the severity of some cases, aircraft were used to expedite transfers and ensure timely treatment.
The identities of the deceased and injured have not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing as authorities notify the families of those affected.
Initial investigations by authorities point to the possible involvement of members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a criminal group with a presence in various areas of Michoacán .
Although there is no official confirmation about who is responsible, security sources indicated that the characteristics of the ambush match actions previously attributed to this organization.
Following the incident, state and federal forces launched an operation along highways, dirt roads, and in nearby communities to locate those responsible for the ambush . Additionally, security personnel were reinforced in the area to prevent further incidents.
This case has attracted attention because Nahuatzen was not among the municipalities with the highest levels of violence during the first months of the year.
Data from citizen organizations indicate that between January and April 2026 no intentional homicides had been reported in this area, while other crimes showed a downward trend.
However, civil society organizations have warned that the region faces various problems related to crime, including extortion, kidnapping, robbery, and disputes linked to illegal logging. These activities have generated constant conflict in communities of the Purépecha Plateau.
