Crime reporter Luis Ángel López Valdez was murdered early Thursday morning in the municipality of Poza Rica, Veracruz.

According to initial reports, the journalist was shot on 20 de Noviembre Avenue in the city of Poza Rica. Authorities have not yet released any information regarding arrests or a possible motive for the crime.

López Valdez also served as deputy delegate of the Cruz Ámbar rescue corporation in the northern region of the state.

Colleagues of the journalist indicated that Luis Ángel López had current protective measures granted by the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists (CEAPP), due to threats he had allegedly received previously.

After the events became known, the newspaper where he worked expressed its condolences to family and friends through a message shared on social media.

The murder of Luis Ángel López comes months after the murder of journalist Carlos Castro, director of the digital portal Código Norte, which occurred last January in the same municipality.

Castro was attacked inside a family business after returning to the region following a period of self-imposed exile due to threats.

These cases are in addition to the disappearance of reporter Roxana Ramírez, which occurred in southern Veracruz, whose whereabouts remain unclarified by the authorities.
