Damaris Salazar Balderas, a city council member in Cortazar, Guanajuato , and her minor son were attacked with gunfire Thursday afternoon in the Las Huertas neighborhood. According to available information, both escaped unharmed, and the case is under investigation by state and federal authorities.

The incident occurred when city councilwoman Damaris Salazar Balderas was traveling in a black, double-cab, armored GMC pickup truck, driven by a bodyguard. According to reports , the bodyguard's vehicle sustained nearly one hundred bullet impacts in the armed attack .

The municipal official and her son were in the unit at the time of the attack, and no injuries were reported.

Following the incident, members of the Municipal Police and the Mexican Army arrived at the scene to cordon off the area around the roundabout in the Las Huertas neighborhood. Subsequently, personnel from the Public Prosecutor's Office, forensic experts, and investigating agents processed the scene and collected ballistic evidence.

Damaris Salazar Balderas serves as an independent trustee in the Cortazar City Council, after resigning from her membership in the Citizens' Movement (MC). She later joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) on the municipal committee, which is headed by her husband.

Following the attack, Diego Armando Estefanía Torres, brother of the mayor of Cortazar, broadcast on social media in which he directly blamed his brother Mauricio Estefanía Torres , as well as a councilwoman identified as Mariana Ruelas.

In his message, he stated that his wife and son were attacked and alleged prior threats, noting that the events "are unacceptable" and blaming people close to the mayor's circle.

For his part, Mayor Mauricio Estefanía Torres distanced himself from the accusations during a live broadcast from the Guanajuato International Airport. He stated, “I am not responsible for anything,” and said he was unaware of the events when he learned of his brother's statements.

The mayor indicated that he was returning from a family trip to Cancun and asked the Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office to conduct the corresponding investigations to clarify what happened.
