On 3 June 2026, a patrol of the Burkinabe special forces from the Rapid Intervention Battalion 19 (BIR 19) struck an IED planted by an armed group (likely JNIM, based on location) in the village of Bangaye (Thion, Gnagna, Est). Four soldiers were injured, there were no fatalities. JNIM claimed to have targeted a Burkinabe army armored vehicle with an IED between Bangaye and Bourgou, causing casualties. JNIM released photographs of the scene, showing the destroyed vehicle.
