SAA event in Guanajuato, Irapuato, Las Huertas area, Mexico on Sat 6th June 2026

A nine-year-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by bullets during an attack targeting a young man in the Las Huertas neighborhood of Irapuato , Guanajuato . This marks the second time this year that a child has died as a collateral victim in this same area.

The attack occurred minutes after noon on Fresas Street , near the corner of Durazno, an area characterized by social deprivation and a lack of paved roads. According to police reports, two men on a motorcycle opened fire directly on a young man; he survived the attack, but stray bullets struck two children playing in the street.

Just a few meters from the entrance to his home lay the lifeless body of Alejandro , affectionately known to his family and neighbors as " Winni ." Next to the boy's body were his bicycle and numerous spent shell casings from a large-caliber weapon. During the same shooting, an eight-year-old girl was also injured by gunfire and was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Municipal police, state public security forces (FSPE), and the National Guard arrived at the scene to secure the perimeter. After confirming the child's death, the officers requested the intervention of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) to begin the corresponding forensic investigations. Despite search operations implemented in the surrounding neighborhoods, the assailants managed to escape.

The Las Huertas neighborhood had already been the scene of a similar tragedy on April 30, when Guadalupe, a little girl of just three years of age, died in the same way: hit by a stray bullet while playing in the street during an attack by someone else.

Adding to this pattern of violence is the murder of seven-year-old Valentina , which occurred on May 26 in the 18 de Agosto neighborhood. Valentina died after stepping in to protect another four-year-old girl when armed men opened fire in front of a grocery store, an incident in which a 14-year-old boy was also wounded.

According to data from the Irapuato Citizen Observatory, between 2017 and June 2 of this year, at least 110 children and adolescents have died violently in the municipality. Of these cases, 92% of the victims were between 13 and 17 years old, while the remaining 8% were children between 0 and 12 years old.
