A South Portland man is in custody and neighbors evacuated Tuesday morning, according to police.

South Portland officers and a regional SWAT team were at a single-family home at 65 Florence St., police said.

“During the operation, detectives located black powder and an unidentified suspicious substance,” police said.

Firefighters and the Portland bomb squad were called to the area and those in neighboring homes were evacuated.

"The South Portland Police Department has since determined that the area is safe and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” police stated. “We would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the service of this warrant.”

The house’s resident, John Flumerfelt, 40, was taken into custody and transported to Cumberland County Jail, police said. 

Flumerfelt is charged with criminal use of explosives, although other firearms charges could be forthcoming, according to police.

“We recognize that road closures and evacuations are inconvenient and difficult, but such steps are often necessary to ensure the safety of all involved,” police stated.
