A powerful explosion has occurred in the Romanian port of Constanta, which, according to preliminary data, may have been caused by the detonation of a naval drone. The city has declared an alarm and activated an emergency response plan.
This is what digi24 writes about.
The explosion occurred near berths 77–78 in the port of Constanta. According to local media, a naval drone was likely to have exploded. After the incident, the Romanian authorities urgently informed the country's leadership, including President Nicuşor Dan and the Prime Minister.
The port has declared an alarm and activated the "Red Intervention" protocol for rapid response to emergencies. Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene of the incident.
The Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced a press conference to provide more detailed information about the causes of the explosion and possible consequences. According to preliminary data, there were no injuries, but the circumstances of the incident are being clarified.
The head of the Romanian Emergency Department, Raid Arafat, clarified that the explosion of the naval drone occurred at 10:28. According to him, at around 06:00 the ARSVOM service reported the probable presence of a drone in the port. After that, the territory was restricted, and the competent authorities isolated the zone. When it became clear that the drone could explode, people from the immediate vicinity were evacuated.
After the explosion, the "Red Plan" response was activated. 80 employees of the Constanta Emergency Inspectorate, eight fire engines, a ladder truck, an intensive care unit, 10 ambulances, two mass casualty response vehicles, a chemical, biological and radiation protection unit, and four vehicles from the regional ambulance service were involved in the response.
In addition, a SMURD helicopter was sent to scout the coastal area. A Black Hawk helicopter from Tulcea was also mobilized. Both helicopters are checking the area, as authorities do not rule out the presence of other drones.
"It was precisely because there may be other drones in the area that it was decided to send out the RO Alert messages, which were recently received in Constanta and Tulcea, with the aim of avoiding the coastal area within a distance of one kilometer and evacuating the entire coastal area until we are sure that there is no risk of another explosion or the presence of other drones in the area," he explained.
Arafat stressed that these measures are preventive and urged the population not to panic. According to him, the drone, as reported by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, self-destructed.
