A man has died after police opened fire during a car chase. The man was suspected of kidnapping and attempted murder.
Two more people were injured in the incident and were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Now two parallel investigations have been launched into the shooting.
The police were alerted at 8:18 p.m. on Tuesday evening about a suspected serious crime in the Stockholm area.
During the evening, a search was conducted for a car driven by the suspected perpetrator – an adult man suspected of kidnapping and attempted murder.
The suspect car was found just before 10 p.m. and the police began a short car chase. The car was stopped on Highway 73 in Nynäshamn outside Stockholm.
– In connection with the pursuit, the car crashed into a railing and stopped, says Carina Skagerlind, press spokesperson for the Stockholm police.
Police: "Forced to fire in response"
During the night, the police announced that "a police officer was forced to fire live ammunition" at the driver of the car when it was stopped.
– The suspected perpetrator, an adult man, has died, says Carina Skagerlind.
Relatives have been notified.
Two injured in car
Two more people were injured in the incident. Police would not elaborate on how the people were injured, but say their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
– The people were with the suspected perpetrator in the car. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
More details about the people in the car and the relationship between them will not be given due to the ongoing investigation.
The police do not want to comment on how many victims there are, citing the confidentiality of preliminary investigations.
Traffic closed overnight
Traffic on Highway 73 was closed in both directions between the Älgvik intersection and the intersection at Teknikervägen when the car was stopped. Traffic was allowed to resume at 7 a.m.
The stopped car has been towed from the scene and a technical examination will be carried out.

The police are investigating themselves
The fact that a police officer has discharged his service weapon must also be routinely investigated in a separate investigation conducted by the Department for Special Investigations. This is an independent department within the Police Authority, separate from other police activities.
