Five people have been killed, and three others are missing following an explosion involving a bomb believed to date back to World War II in eastern Indonesia, Jakarta Globe reports.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, May 31, in Biak Numfor Regency in Papua province.
“The explosion is suspected to have originated from a World War II-era bomb. The investigation is still ongoing,” local police noted. According to the authorities, at least 19 people were injured in the blast.
The explosion also destroyed six houses in the area. Preliminary findings suggest the ordnance may have detonated while local residents were attempting to open it.
Police added that another unexploded mortar shell was found nearby.
