26th May 2026
On May 26, following the arrest of Dr. Mohammad Ishaq Kindo, protests erupted in Ouagadougou. Dr. Mohammad Ishaq Kindo, a prominent Burkinabè Sunni Salafist religious figure, was arrested after criticizing the government over a proposed law aimed at banning places of worship in public buildings. The Burkinabè Muslim community was outraged by this arrest, described as violent, of the vice-president of the Sunni Movement in Burkina Faso (MSBF) and coordinator of the Council of Ulema and Elders of the Sunni movement. Protests broke out in the capital, particularly around the Grand Mosque of Ouagadougou, where riot police dispersed demonstrators with tear gas.
