On May 24 at around 10:35 AM, revolutionary joint forces took the initiative and launched an ambush against the military council column of about 300 troops, which had split into three separate columns as it approached Phalan Kan village in the Ngathayauk sub-township. The ensuing exchange of fire lasted for about two hours, leaving 17 military council soldiers dead on the ground and no fewer than 50 others wounded.
