CREEDMOOR, N.C. (WNCN) — A Granville County church was surrounded by a bomb squad and a hazmat team Saturday after a report of a suspicious package, the sheriff’s office said.

The incident was reported at Rock Spring Missionary Baptist Church at 3180 Bruce Garner Road, about five miles southeast of Creedmoor, according to a Saturday afternoon Granville County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Church staffers told authorities that someone left a package on the front porch of the church, the news release said.

Church workers took the package inside the church before law enforcement arrived, officials said.

Granville County fire agencies and deputies initially responded to “assess the situation and ensure the safety of church staff and the surrounding community,” Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain said.

Soon, other agencies were sent to the scene.

“Specialized personnel examined the package and conducted a thorough assessment. The investigation determined that the item did not pose an explosive, chemical, or biological threat,” Fountain said.

The investigation included the North Carolina SBI Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, North Carolina Emergency Management and the Raleigh Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Officials said the placement of the package is still under investigation.

“The sheriff’s office appreciates the cooperation of church staff and the coordinated response of all participating agencies,” Fountain said.
