In a shocking series of violent incidents that has left the community in Harare, Makhaza, reeling, six men were shot dead within hours of each other this past weekend, Cape Town Etc reports.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently investigating the two separate cases, which occurred in the informal settlement late on Sunday evening and during the early hours of Monday morning.
In the first incident, three young men aged between 20 and 24 were killed inside a dwelling on Khonkxa Street, Makhaza, around 7:30pm on Sunday.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, family members of the victims heard gunshots and rushed to the scene, only to discover the grim aftermath of the shooting.
‘The victims were found with gunshot wounds inside the structure,’ Traut reported, adding to the grief that has enveloped the neighbourhood.
The motives for this brutal act of violence remain unclear, with the suspects having fled the scene and eluded capture.
Just hours later, another group of three adult males in their thirties met with a similarly tragic fate at a local shebeen in Endlovini. This incident transpired around 1:38am on Monday.
Initially sustained injuries from the gunfire, the victims later succumbed while receiving medical care.
With no suspects apprehended in either shooting, the police are actively pursuing leads as they work to unravel this disturbing chain of events.
‘Police deployments and operations have also been increased in the affected areas to stabilise the situation and prevent further violence,’ Traut emphasised, noting the heightened concerns in the community.
SAPS management has assured residents that every available resource will be employed in the hunt for those responsible.
A team of experienced detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit has been assigned to these cases, highlighting the urgency with which law enforcement is treating this violence.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application, allowing for anonymous reporting.
In addition to these harrowing events, the weekend saw seven other fatalities across the province in separate incidents, compounding fears around safety and rising violence in the area.
