At least 24 people were killed and 70 others injured in a suicide attack on a passenger train carrying military personnel in Pakistan.
Source: The Telegraph
Details: The attack took place on Sunday in the city of Quetta, the capital of the southwestern province of Balochistan. A suicide bomber drove a car packed with explosives into one of the train cars as it passed a traffic light.
The powerful explosion caused two carriages to overturn and catch fire. Several nearby buildings and cars parked along the railway tracks were also damaged.
The train was carrying Pakistani military personnel and their families, who were heading to the city of Peshawar to celebrate the religious holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying in a statement that the attack targeted the country's security forces.
Local doctors reported that dozens of injured people were hospitalized. Several of the victims are in critical condition.
For reference: Balochistan province is the largest and poorest region in Pakistan. The region lags significantly behind the rest of the country in almost all indicators, including education, employment, and overall economic development.
The province, rich in oil, natural gas and other minerals, has long been the scene of a low-intensity insurgency. Baloch separatists accuse the central government of exploiting the region's natural resources without benefiting the local population and demand independence from Pakistan. The militants frequently carry out attacks on security forces, government installations and civilians both inside and outside the province.
