JNIM Claims Capture of Seven Niger Republic Security Personnel in Kirtachi Attack

By: Zagazola Makama

The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) group has claimed responsibility for an attack on security forces in Kirtachi area of Niger Republic, alleging that seven security personnel were captured during the assault.

In a statement circulated on jihadist-linked channels, the group also displayed images purportedly showing the captured personnel alongside weapons and equipment allegedly recovered during the attack.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Tillabéri region, an area that has witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups operating along the Niger-Mali-Burkina Faso border corridor.

The claim comes amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in parts of the Sahel, where attacks targeting military positions and civilian communities have continued despite intensified counterterrorism operations by regional forces.

Local observers and commentators reacting to the incident criticised what they described as inadequate public acknowledgment of casualties suffered by security personnel in such attacks.

Some commentators called on authorities to honour fallen soldiers and show greater empathy toward bereaved families, arguing that repeated silence over battlefield losses could affect troop morale and public confidence.

As of press time, Nigerien authorities had not officially confirmed the number of casualties or the alleged capture of security personnel claimed by the group.

Independent verification of the images and statements released by JNIM was not immediately possible.

Security analysts note that armed groups in the Sahel increasingly use propaganda releases, including videos and photographs, to project strength, influence public perception, and undermine confidence in state security institutions.
