CBRN event in Rwampara General Hospital, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the on Fri 22nd May 2026
22nd May 2026
A violent crowd stormed an Ebola treatment facility after the death of popular local youth and football player Eli Munongo Wangu. His family and residents rejected the official Ebola diagnosis, claiming he died of typhoid fever. When medical staff refused to release the highly infectious body to prevent further spread of the virus, the enraged mob attacked the site. They threw projectiles and set fire to two isolation tents operated by the humanitarian NGO ALIMA. Police intervened with tear gas and warning shots. One healthcare worker was injured. Medical staff were placed under military protection for safety. The six Ebola patients inside the burning tents survived the attack and were safely transferred to the main hospital building.
