After hundreds of inmates went on a rampage at the high security Central Jail in Kapurthala on Saturday night, the police this morning said normalcy had been restored on the premises. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said things were back to normal at the jail and all inmates had been brought back to their barracks. He said three inmates, who had been injured during a clash at the jail, had been admitted to a hospital. The Kapurthala police said normalcy had returned to the jail complex after an hour-long operation around 2 am today. Notably, hundreds of jail inmates, brandishing rods and sticks, had taken to the roof of the Kapurthala jail last night as total chaos had spread in Barrack 4 of the jail. The police had to use teargas shells and grenades to rein in the inmates and get them back to the barracks. Videos of small fires across the jail and groups of men (inmates) walking around on the jail roof, with sticks and rods, had gone viral on social media, as prisoners shot videos. A completely vandalised jail premises, with fires at several places and broken walls and boundaries could be seen in the videos. As some inmates made claims of a jail break and shots being fired at them, the police said not a single prisoner or inmate had escaped the jail nor any gun shot was fired. All senior security personnel remained deployed at the jail until the wee hours to bring back the prisoners and resolve the row. It took the Kapurthala police and jail administration several hours to restore normalcy at the prison. SSP Gaurav Toora said, "Last night's incident happened after a fight between a group of inmates in Barrack 4 of Phase I of the Kapurthala jail. This barrack holds hardened criminals who have three to five criminal cases against them. There was no jail break and no gun shots were fired during the entire incident. The inmates still on the roof until late, were brought back amidst heavy force deployment and deliberations in the wee hours. Three jail inmates sustained injuries from tear gas shells and are currently under treatment. Things at the jail are completely under control. " Heavy police force remains deputed at the jail, the police said, adding that the counting of inmates at the jail was on.
