CBRN event in Gazipur, Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology area, Bangladesh on Sun 17th May 2026

On May 17, clashes took place between Chhatra Dal, affiliated with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS)-backed students at the Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) campus in Gazipur District over appointment of Professor Mohammad Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of DUET, injuring at least 20 people from both sides, including Police, in the clash, reports Prothom Alo. The entire campus was in a state of chaos with brickbats, chases and arson. Police fired tear gas shells several times to bring the situation under control. Chhatra Dal and ICS have made counter-complaints against each other over the incident. Additional Police have been deployed in the campus area to maintain normalcy.
