Three armed civilians were killed on the highway between Cocucho and Ocumicho, Michoacán, after a collision with a deployment of the Civil Guard, National Guard, and Mexican Army on May 19. The deceased were wearing patches with the Colombian flag on their tactical vests, directly linking them to an operational cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel that controls the Purépecha Plateau. The confrontation erupted on one of the most dangerous routes in the indigenous region, a contested corridor where armed incursions keep the autonomous Purépecha communities under siege. Although official discourse claims absolute control through air and ground patrols, sources in the area indicated that local criminal cells maintain clandestine surveillance of the dirt road access points. The scene was secured by forensic experts who recovered assault rifles and radio communication equipment. State authorities are coordinating the identification of the bodies to determine if they are foreign fighters recruited by the criminal organization, while the military deployment remains fixed on rural roads to contain possible reprisals.
