An armed attack against security forces at kilometer 181 of the Mazatlán-Tepic highway, near Escuinapa, Sinaloa, triggered a deployment of the Interinstitutional Group on May 21, 2026. The attack on this strategic corridor forced the reinforcement of the border with Nayarit. The attack brought traffic to a standstill and raised alerts in the southern region, an area experiencing high levels of tension in recent weeks. Bus companies immediately suspended their routes to Sinaloa due to the imminent risk of further blockades on the highway. Official vehicles with bullet holes and spent casings on the asphalt marked the perimeter, where our reporter on the ground confirmed the presence of reinforced patrols guarding detours and dirt roads. The federal cordon aims to prevent the retreat of criminal cells. The Nayarit government activated checkpoints on Highway 15D. Law enforcement agencies at all three levels of government maintain territorial control in Escuinapa in an attempt to restore public order, with no arrests reported.
