One police officer was killed and another wounded in a confrontation with armed civilians in Matamoros, triggering a major security operation coordinated by the federal government in one of the regions most hotly contested for territorial control between factions of the Gulf Cartel. The escalation of violence and the direct attacks on federal agencies have kept the regional stability of the state of Tamaulipas under close scrutiny by military intelligence. The attack began when agents of the Federal Protection Service were rammed by a pickup truck, sparking a chase during which the occupants opened fire. A second vehicle carrying gunmen then joined the pursuit and attacked the officers. Following the deployment of law enforcement, the capture of two suspected attackers in the area was confirmed.
