Under strict institutional secrecy, federal and state authorities are withholding information on the aftermath of a confrontation that occurred Wednesday afternoon, May 13, in the Sacramento neighborhood of Gómez Palacio, Durango. The incident, which involved members of the National Guard (GN), resulted in one National Guard member and three civilians being injured. Two of the civilians, occupants of a vehicle and the assailants, were taken into custody. The events unfolded on Guadalupe Victoria Street when officers spotted a white Nissan Tiida driving suspiciously. When they signaled for the vehicle to stop for a routine inspection, 19-year-old José Ángel Mendoza Franco opened fire on the officers, who immediately returned fire, wounding him in the abdomen and femur. His companion, 19-year-old Pamela Yamileth Negrete Sánchez, was wounded in the left cheek. A pedestrian identified as Johan suffered the amputation of two fingers on one hand after being struck by a projectile, while Esteban, 27, a member of the National Guard, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg. The Deputy Attorney General for the Laguna Region of Durango, Juan Francisco Ángeles Zapata, reported that, because the attack was directed against federal forces, the investigation has been taken over by the Attorney General's Office (FGR). "They are handling the case," the official stated. Meanwhile, the Attorney General of Coahuila, Federico Fernández, emphasized the existing coordination in the Laguna Metropolitan Area and ruled out any fatalities. "There were no deaths in that confrontation. Where there are security operations, criminals will always try to intimidate the authorities," Fernández declared, reaffirming that the joint operations between Durango and Coahuila will continue. So far, the National Guard has not issued an official statement detailing the legal status of the three detainees or the exact motive behind the attack.
