SAA event in Mexico on Sun 17th May 2026
17th May 2026
An armed attack carried out Sunday night against a checkpoint manned by the Community Police of Nahuatzen, Michoacán, left a preliminary death toll of two community guards. The attack triggered a large-scale mobilization of security forces in the Purépecha Plateau region. The incident occurred when members of the Indigenous Guard, known locally as "Kuarichas," were conducting preventative inspections at the Sevina checkpoint, located near the area known as La Astilladora. At that location, the officers were ambushed by heavily armed assailants who opened fire directly on the police structure with high-powered weapons. Despite being outnumbered and the surprise attack, the community guards repelled the aggression and engaged in a firefight to defend themselves, while simultaneously requesting reinforcements from state and federal agencies through emergency channels.
