A surveillance operation implemented by public security forces in the municipality of Apatzingán, Michoacán, resulted in a fierce confrontation that left one gunman dead and two others arrested. The events occurred on Friday morning when members of the Civil Guard and the Municipal Police were conducting preventative patrols. Through the official communication channel, the officers received citizen alerts warning of the presence of armed civilians committing illicit activities in the vicinity of the Lázaro Cárdenas and La Pradera neighborhoods. Upon arriving at the designated residential area, the law enforcement officers were met with gunfire. After immediately repelling the initial attack, the officers initiated a pursuit that extended through various streets of the city, as the attackers attempted to disperse to evade capture. The final exchange of gunfire took place on Constitución Street, located in the La Pradera neighborhood. At that point, police officers killed one of the assailants, who was later officially identified as 22-year-old Luis Fernando T. Following the ceasefire in the street, state and municipal authorities activated a perimeter cordon reinforced with air support. This rapid tactical response led to the arrest of 20-year-old Saúl M., alias “La Gacela,” as well as a 16-year-old identified by the initials Alejandro Q. At the scene of the arrest and the fatality, law enforcement agencies seized a motorcycle, the vehicle the attackers were allegedly using, as well as a handgun used against the officers. Forensic specialists who processed the area collected approximately eight spent .223 caliber casings, characteristic of assault rifles. The area remained heavily guarded while agents from the Michoacán State Attorney General's Office collected testimonies and documented ballistic evidence to be included in the investigation. Forensic experts concluded their field work with the removal of the body, ordering its transfer to the Forensic Medical Service facilities for the autopsy required by state law. Meanwhile, the two civilians arrested were presented before the Michoacán State Attorney General's Office, which will determine their legal status and investigate their possible involvement in other high-impact crimes committed in the Tierra Caliente region. The deployment of federal forces concluded hours later without locating the other participants in the attack.
