The Purépecha region of Michoacán is experiencing a day of high tension and anxiety. Following the murder of two community guards in the neighboring municipality of Nahuatzen, armed groups unleashed intense clashes and drug-related roadblocks in the vicinity of Charapan, a situation that has sown panic among residents and brought the main roads to a standstill. The current wave of violence originated hours earlier in the town of Santa María Sevina, which belongs to the municipality of Nahuatzen. A commando unit carried out a direct attack against the community patrol's checkpoint. In this attack, two kuarichas (members of the traditional indigenous guard) lost their lives. The double homicide raised alarms in the indigenous communities of the area and served as the trigger for the armed clashes that spread toward Charapan.
